The contemporary defenseman embodies a hybrid role, combining strong defensive attributes with a knack for contributing offensively. Elite defensemen consistently excel in skillfully maneuvering the puck out of their defensive zone, actively participating in offensive rushes, and enhancing their offensive capabilities like never before. This development camp will hone in on the specific skill sets that distinguish modern defensemen from their peers, aiming to bolster player confidence and elevate their positional awareness.

    OFFENSIVE BLUE LINE DEVELOPMENT

    Enhancing creativity and decision-making to open scoring chances through positioning, deception and shot selection.
  • TECHNICAL SKATING FOR DEFENSEMEN

    TECHNICAL SKATING FOR DEFENSEMEN

    Improving agility, speed, and transitions, focusing on backward and lateral movements for better defensive and offensive support.
  • PUCK CONTROL AND RETRIEVAL

    PUCK CONTROL AND RETRIEVAL

    Mastering puck retrieval and maintaining control under pressure with drills on quick turns and smart puck management.
  • TRANSITIONAL PLAY

    TRANSITIONAL PLAY

    Focusing on transitioning from defense to offense with speed and precision, emphasizing quick puck movement and effective breakouts.
  • DEFENSIVE AWARENESS

    DEFENSIVE AWARENESS

    Developing skills to improve positioning and understanding of the game to anticipate and neutralize offensive threats effectively.

Meet Markus Phillips, the esteemed head instructor at our Hybrid Defensemen Development Camp. With years of professional experience and a passion for developing top-tier talent, Markus leads our camp with expertise and dedication.

  • Drafted in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings
  • Played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Owen Sound Attack, Guelph Storm and London Knights
  • Recognized for leadership, serving as captain on multiple occasions for Team Canada
  • Represented Team Canada in the 2019 IIHF World Juniors in Vancouver BC
